Frequently Asked Questions

Can I serve alcohol to guests on my property?

Yes. You will need a Special Events Permit to sell liquor to guests on your own private property.

Note: Selling liquor includes direct and indirect charges for the liquor. For example, an indirect charge for liquor can be the inclusion of a quantity of liquor in the admission to the event.

See the Special Event Liquor Policy Manual for more information.

Is a liquor license required to host an event?

A liquor license is not required, but a permit might be required depending on the type of event, where it is held, and who will be attending. The short answer is, for a family event (wedding, birthday, reunion, memorial etc.) on your own residential property where guests are invited and the bar is hosted, no permit is required. A Special Event Permit will be required for any event where liquor or event tickets will be sold (either at beforehand or at the door), on any property, private or public.

See the Special Event Liquor Policy Manual for more information.

Who carries the liquor license?

In most instances, you do! Any individual over the age of 19 or any business may purchase and carry a Special Event Permit. The permittee is legally responsible for the event and is liable for any contraventions of the Act, Regulation, and/or terms and conditions.

The applicant for the permit must have Special Event Certification.

What if I want to host an event on public property? (eg. a block party)

It can happen! You will need to apply for a public event SEP, and obtain permission from the local government and the police authority that has jurisdiction over the area.

See the Special Event Liquor Policy Manual for more information.

Who purchases the liquor?

You do. But, we are more than happy to help with suggestions of type and quantity. Let us help you find what you’re looking for!

Can I sell tickets or charge for drinks to cover my costs?

Yes. However, when tickets are sold to an event you will need to have a Special Events Permit (SEP). Note that, generally, an SEP will not be issued for special events designed to make a profit unless the purpose of the event is to raise funds for a charitable cause.

See Appendix 2 in the Special Event Liquor Policy Manual for more information.

How much space do I need for The Cabinet to park on my property?

The Cabinet is 13’x11’x8’.

Does The Cabinet serve non-alcoholic drinks?

Yes! We offer non-alcoholic cocktails and beverages. We can’t wait for you to try them!

How far will The Cabinet travel?

The Cabinet herself is 77 years old! Right now, she will travel on the island from Victoria to Nanaimo, as well as to the Gulf Islands. One day, we hope to have a fleet of Cabinets to travel across the country!

Are The Cabinet bartenders part of the package?

Yes. Visit our About page to meet the bartenders/owners.

Can I rent only the trailer?

At this time we are not renting out the trailer as a separate entity of our business. We come as a package deal, and we’re excited to work with you to suit your needs!
